Earliest Memory?

Love is a healing and most spiritual feeling. Anger is a scorpion that will sting itself to death.
I was born with a lot of love in my heart. I remember being a baby. How young, I don't know. I remember coming from a place of light and love, and the light was always behind me. I don't remember looking back at it. I just felt normal as if it were a part of me. I remember smiling at people and they would smile back. I also 'knew' my mother, brother and grandmother immediately - as if I had known them forever. I remember those feelings and it was all based on LOVE. We obviously are born to love one another.

What is your earliest memory and was it based on love?

i saw spirits when i was younger. i remember seeing an old man carrying a lantern he looked solid enough but his feet weren't there.frightened me to death,no wonder i've turned out so weird.wish i had a such a sweeeeeeeeet photo of me as baby

  You must have been very attuned back then. It sounds as if you saw a ghost. Something from the Fourth Dimension. I have often read about the lives of other times going on at the same time as the Now.
  There are many stories of marching Roman soldiers around York and underneath the Minster. They uncovered an ancient fort right underneath the Minster and that is where marching soldiers were seen. Their legs only started from just under the knees. Bit like your old man where you could not see his feet.

  Perhaps you were sent to those people to teach them how to love. You may have been their very last chance. Did they show love later?

    I was a sad little girl and yes my step mother did tell me she understood how i had felt much later so i suppose that was some consolation.

It is dark, and I am carried out into a starkly black and white snow covered landscape. In the lamplight I see close to me the details of twigs coated in white frost or snow. I am handed down by the starchy one into the arms of the one who smells right.

The doors close and the car moves off. Lying on my back I can see when we move from the dark into a street in which there are pools of light from each shop. There are canopies in front of many of them with things stacked under them. The light is less vivid, and less all enveloping than that of the shopping streets we now know. The colours are muted. We move into dimmer light again, and the memory ends.

I asked my mother about this memory, and there is only one occasion that fits: I was six days old and being taken home from the maternity home.

There was hard, settled, frozen snow the February I was born.

My father's vehicle in those days was a fish lorry, but grandad lent him his car to take home his first grandchild, so this is the only time before I was a sitting up child that I travelled in a car. I must have travelled on my mother's lap many times in the lorry (children did in those days) but the angle of my view in this memory is completely wrong for that.

The logical route from the Croft Baker Maternity Home at the top end of Mill Road to our home in Prince's Road would have been down Trinity Road/Beacon Avenue past the cemetery and the Girls' Grammar School and on to Clee Road, but my memory shows Mill Road to St. Peter's Avenue with all its shops. Apparently not all of the obvious route was metalled road in those days, and - although my memory includes nothing of this and neither of my parents could recall either - we may have stopped to introduce me to Grandad, Nothernan, Uncle Steve and Auntie Clare who lived at the bottom end of Mill Road.

I also find the concentration of light and the muted colours of my memories interesting. I have since learned that babies are supposed only to see in monochrome at first. Most of my early memories are in glorious technicolor, and here they are not truly monochrome but more like an interim stage on one of those fades on a film from black and white to colour.

This is the earliest thing I can remember.

I remember people (including a grandmother) who died before I was two... I also remember being told I was too old to ride in the pram any more!

As a child I also remembered a previous life as a boy called Thomas which was confusing to say the least.

I have to say I was not a loving child. I was, according to my mother, savage looking, miserable and not exactly a bundle of fun.

  Yes, it is terrible to be kicked out of one's comfort zone, such as your pram. Mine was the baby crib-cage. My feet had begun to stick out at the end - way past my ankles! There was a war going on but a small pallet was finally found. I cried
  You were considered a savage little creature and no fun? Reminds me of the Wuthering Heights story when their father first brought home Heathcliff!

Thank you so much, Lissa-T. That is a really stunning description of your first memory. It does make sense when you backtrack on it.
I do remember a lot too when I was a baby. That is why I have always treated babies with respect! They are aware of far more than we know!

  I have known about fifteen or eighteen people with clear pre-one year old memories: at least three-quarters of them blood relatives on both sides of the family. I assume that early memory is a genetic quirk which may well be enhanced by loving families who talk to and with their babies and toddlers giving them very early terms of reference and identification.

    I daresay you are right, Lissa, for my grandmother spent a lot of time with me, and my great-aunt Charlotte taught me how to read before I was five. There was a war going on and we were near the Yeovilton Air-base. Lots of bombing.
    My mother had a job as a driver for officers, who would leave the Air Base for places like Salisbury Plains, or offices in other towns. She would have to walk there and back. So, there was little time for her to spend with her two children.
    I agree with you, a genetic quirk plus interest in the new family member: the baby! Grandparents and other older members with more free time, enjoy teaching baby to know who is who. I am grateful I was born during that time, war or no war.
    The parents & grandparents have very little time left for their children these days. It seems to be all work and no play. JW

      My family has another quirk. Other families may move away from each other, but mine clusters. For example, there are ten houses in our post-code of which eight are lived in by close relatives on both sides of the family of my sister's children who have never lived more than a short walk away from all their grandparents, uncles and aunts.

        How very wonderful and rare. Ours are completely dispersed now. I am seeking my half-sister in South Africa, and the family of Albert Barrett, (one of a twin), who died in Gallipoli. I want the descendents of his twin brother to have his medals.
        
        I am sure you, or somebody in your family is working with other members to keep up the Family Tree. Is someone else writing down the stories of the elders?

        My half sister has bought a house on an island on the Pacific coast of Canada for when she and her husband retire to be close to the cousins who gradually migrated there to be close to their parents (my uncle and aunt); I'm not quite sure how many family members there are now permanently resident, but I think thirty-something for Christmas lunch was mentioned.

All my early childhood memories are of pain and confusion. My earliest memory is but a glimmer of my first birthday and a small cake made just for me. I have described the scene in vivid detail, but my mother swears I have seen pictures. The problem is that I describe details not seen in the pictures, but verified nevertheless.

But not all memories are as easy to recall. When I was 29 I asked my brother about his most painful childhood memory. He recalled a time when I was six and he was four and my father beat me with a wooden paddle. The pain was so horrific that I blocked it from my memory. However, after several minutes a black space in my mind was pricked by a pinhole of light. As the hole expanded I saw something on the other side. It was the memory of my dad beating me.

I have several memories of pain in my life. However, it was not until my oldest daughter was born that I felt true unconditional love for the first time in my life. Only when I held her in my arms and looked into her eyes did I ever comprehend how God could possibly love me.

  This is such a beautiful story and I thank you for telling us about it. It is terribly miserable not receiving any acknowledgment for living. To be ignored unless you were beaten. I am so sorry.
  Then, you suddenly realized, after so many years of what you thought was the norm, you saw your daughter and was suddenly struck by the emotion of Love!
  The overwhelming feeling came to you at that moment and you were finally given the gift, the knowledge of how to love.
  Perhaps your parents simply did not know how to love themselves. This sort of thing can be handed down for many generations.
  I am so glad that you can be happy now, and I wish happiness and contentment for the rest of your life.

I really envy people who have early memories.
I think mine is from when I was about four and it was Christmas Eve and my older brother was talking to me. We were sitting on my bed and it was a time of sweetness and love.As this brother died soon afterwards I am grateful for the post that is making me recollect albeit with tears in my eyes.

When I did NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming)training we had to walk back in time & I went back to when I was about two.In this experience I was very angry with my parents because I wanted to do something independently and they were overprotecting me.The rage I felt made me wonder about things;I have been fiercely independent for most of my life even though I have been married. Did it stem from such an incident?

I could remember family reunions every Christmas, seeing my cousins a lot... A drive to the grocery every now and then... Hmm. I think I'd be around three or four.

I could remember knowing a lot of problems involving the family, but never really asked about it. Bit disturbing, but I was loved. ^^

My earliest memory is of sitting on my Aunt's floor in their lounge, its Christmas and snowing silently outside. I'm surrounded by the soft glow of love, its a warm orangy light and you could almost reach out and feel a texture to it. There was laughter as my parents and my Aunt and Uncle exchanged chit chat and stories, and I'm sat there, in the middle of it all, rosie cheeked and toothless smiles.
I remember feeling safe and contented, as I took the nut crackers in my chubby fingers and beat out a rhythum on a wooden nut bowl to The Little Drummer boy!
I couldn't talk at that point so I must have been quite young, but could sit up and waddle about on my own. But its a lovely memory and I treasure it dearly.

I remember sitting in the back garden with a pile of threepenny bits it was a lovely day I remember I couldnt find the money later. I also remember a yellow crib in the bedroom upstairs I was about 3 [there was no baby]

I remember the threepenny bits. They were pretty! I suppose an adult came and took the money away when you were not looking.
Finding the yellow crib is a mystery. Perhaps it had been yours and your family were waiting for a new baby to happen. On the other hand, perhaps a baby did not make it all the way into this world, and was taken back to the other world?

This is an interesting post that you have written. You are lucky to have a photo of yourself as an infant. The earliest photo of me that I have was taken when I was four years old. Your description of how love has been with you since your earliest days is heartwarming. It does show on your baby image and it often shines through in your comments. I have often thought that you seem to be a very loving person. I don't have memory in detailed images from when I was young, but I can remember certain events in feelings. It's hard to explain, but it seems that I retain feelings more. eg contentment, happiness, sadness, security, fear - all these things but not the details.

  If your mother was busy, grandma was not nearby and you had brothers and sister, then, you probably were not able to remember much, Marika. You would have been busy all day without a break. So busy that before you could think twice, something else was happening.
  Life was slow in our home. A great-great Uncle, born in 1876 & my grandmother, born in 1884. The days went on forever. No TV. Radio for news, Songs of Praise, a story in the evening and toasting bread around the fire at teatime. It was so different in the late forties/early fifties. There was time to discuss everything under the sun and the atmosphere was calm with the two elderly, gentlefolk in whose charge I was most fortunate to be.
  When I was taken back by my mother and plunged into the great hotel world, I certainly had a shock. I was terrified of the Hoover! Terrified of the hair dryer! My mother and others used language I had never heard before and I was abused verbally, physically and emotionally from then onwards. Even yanked out of bed at 2:00 in the morning and beaten up if the drawers were not tidy, e.g. She hated having to have me back.
  Nobody told me, I found out later, that my grandmother had breast cancer and she could not cope anymore. Uncle Fred died a few months after I left and from then on, she lived alone and spent a long time at a hospital in Bristol getting radio-active needles.
  So, I was in a different world. And I remember every detail of it, now and will forever. I did have to bring myself up too. I had to learn by watching others and I was very fortunate to meet a wonderful mentor, called Emsie, in Bermuda during the late sixties. She taught me so much. I also never stopped reading, including Shakespeare etc., and taught myself different languages when I lived overseas.. It was to make up for starting to work at fifteen.
  Many years later, I was blessed with the ability to forgive. That is another story altogether.
  So, I feel that your life was probably hectic, busy and full of life. I do hope, however, that you were treated kindly by your family, Marika.

What a dreadful shock for you after such a gentle beginning. My earliest memories is at about 31/2 years. My mother was pushing a pram up the street to the park. I walked beside her holding onto the handle. In the pram my 2year old sister and my baby brother ,a few months old. We went to the park most days, lots of trees and green grass, a very pleasant safe place, or so it seemed to me. The war was on and bombs were dropped on many clear nights. We lived within yards of a railway line to the docks so the bombs damaged the house on more than one occasion. My little brother died a few months later, complications after measles. Luckily my mother,sister and I survived, dad did too. At that time he was in the army.

  Oh, thank you so much for that, silverliz. I am very sorry about your dear little brother. I remember getting measles too but the whooping cough was the worst. Black angels were swooping from the corners of the bedroom ceiling, and Nana had lit a candle for me. It was probably causing the weird shadows - haha!
  
  That was a happy moment for you to remember. Walking beside your mother and holding the baby's pram handle, with your little sister in it as well.
  
  We were bombed in Yeovil too. Our house got a bit, but the house attached to ours was really devastated. It is in the BBC People's War, stories by those who were old enough to remember.
  We were bombed because Yeovilton Air Base was just outside the town. Do you recall the bombs? I don't.

    Thank you jollyweez. Its interesting you mentioned the BBC People' War,stories. I contributed a story about childhood. Tried this afternoon to call it up.something wrong with the web site. I would very much like to read your story.
    I don't remember being afraid but I do remember being bombed out in 1943. My mother was upset about the black soot falling on her clean washing. The yard was covered in broken glass, mother, baby sister,grandparents,6 uncles and aunts and me were all safe in the shelter. There was an unexploded bomb in the back lane, my nana stood at the edge of the big hole hardly able to see anything. People said the bomb had been made in Poland, they made it so that it didn't go off.
    That bomb in Yeovil was very close to you ! 2 lucky girls.

  You are so right, Janet. There was always that sense of wonder wherever we went, at that age. I even played with snails! Did you? I would paint the garden shed with mud using an old paintbrush!! Play with the colours in a puddle in the road that had petrol in it.

My earlist memory ... I believe I was 1 or 2 there abouts not quite sure on that as I remember being lifted from my cot by my dad and being given a cuddle was mid afternoon i think as such was shining through the window .. that also happens to be my earlist memory of spirit as there was a man standin at the door that I did not know, never seen before or since that day lol .. sounds odd to some but there you

To remember being lifted up by a loving dad, probably after your nap.
I was always aware of others that had died in the house I grew up in, (til I was ten.) Two of them did not think much of me and they made me feel ill at ease. The others were hardly there at all.
I found out later that at least four people had died in that house before my grandmother and Uncle Fred did, (after I had left.)
That person you saw could have been the spirit of your grandfather?
Thank you for being able to remember that memory for all of us. Each memory like this is tremendously important for all of us who need to believe that there is a world after this one.
It would be so nice if it really were. So every story is an affirmation that this afterword exists.

  I don't mind if you just 'drag' it over to your website. I just get so tired typing and typing so much. My fingers ache sometimes at the end of hours here, after answering all comments. I have myasthenia gravis, and it makes my whole body get weak just trying to keep-up with everybody.
  So, if you could do that, it would be such a help to me.
  I really don't mind. By the way, that is my baby picture!
