I'm researching this subject for my writing but it is confusing.
Everyone has a different definition of words and things.
I'd like to ask you... What is Satanism to you? What are your thoughts about it? Is it a religion? Does it tie into other beliefs?

Yes, quite hard to understand-- it takes a lot of mind power to do so; but the people who agreed and worshiped him didn't really think much. It is a religion to those who are signing themselves unconsciously to the damned.
After everything that I've known and discovered, I suddenly found myself wishing that I wasn't curious at all, as it weighs down my heart and soul. If only there was a delete button in my mind!

i know what you mean about weighing down on your heart and your soul that is the nature of it to attract people to the freedom of it.of course you feel the heaviness because as a child of God you are pure light and love and it drags you down.offer this heaviness up to God and he will take it from you.sometimes to create you must confront things that you don't want to confront.i'm sure that everyone at hopechild is holding you in the light as you do your research.

Now I have been over with my daughter for a good few hours and we had a discussion on this subject. We talked about music, bands, influences, CD covers etc.....but....she then told me something I did not know.
She did textiles and design at college....
The Devil's Cloth....
She told me that stripes were known as the Devil's cloth. Had I never noticed how a jester (the fool), prostitues, bankers, convicts, concentration camp inmates, gangsters..even hangmen.

I felt like I've sinned a lot, and I prayed afterwards, saying I was sorry for being beyond curious as to know who he really is.
There are times that I'd want to go back to the website again to know more... but it's not worth the nightmares and trouble.

My idea of satanism is a worshipping of the devil, a calling upon the devil as we christians call upon god. Rituals take place and secret meetings, yuk! morbid stuff.
Can be dangerous stuff, i knew of two quite nice young men who were good friends who got involved in it for fun and one murdered the other during a ritual, he hacked his friend to death.

All evidence showed they had been carrying out ritual satanism by the stuff the police took from the flat where they lived, one of them slept in the local grave yard.
When asked why he had murdered his friend he said he had heard a voice tell him to and couldnt stop himself,he had stabbed his friend seventy two times and the flat they lived in there was blood all over it.
So this is what can happen when messing around with such things.

There are many paths religion (as a loose word) takes. I decry no one their own belief, just observe and study facts put infront of me.
To understand all facets is a little like a child building a bridge with wooden blocks. Later in life, a cook finding all the ingredients to make a pie....
Sometimes the equasion/recipe works.....other times it makes no sense like a flat Yorkshire Pudding

The two boys came from stable homes and grew up together they both went to colledge and got jobs, there was no previous sign of instability of any kind. Right up until the murder they were seen out and about behaving as young lads do.

"Posessed" by a demon.Thats what i would say about the situation you mention here.Although they cant posess us at will,but only if we let them to,such as by performing certain rituals.I know simillar cases but in a differant context,but these things do happen.

categories....
It is a belief that is a desire to worship so called "Truth" the destruction of what is believe to be"lies" from what is felt to be religious dogma!!
That in that dogma lies absence of thought and a failure
to search "Truth".....
But I ask the question...
"What is perceived truth" ???
Personally I do not believe in Satan or that it exists
I do believe that the forces of Good and evil exist
as energy forces within the universe...you can not have one with out the other...like a weighing scales!!
Balance is needed to learn and grow!!
As mentioned above be careful as the vibe that is an
energy force could lie heavy on ones heart!!
What is a persons intention will manifest and it is this
that causes many mixed feelings!!

I echo many of the wise comments and thank Safriz for new information about Iblees- not heard that name before.
I recently read someone saying that a chapel had been desecrated by someone (they blamed witchcraft but we know that is unlikely from our wise friends Tylluanpenry and others at Hope Child).
The report said that everything in the Chritian tradition had been reversed -like the Bible and Crucifix had been turned upside down.
I thought then that it is a pretty odd sort of "religion" that doesn't establish its own rites and rituals merely mocks and degrades others.

Now, Lucifer is anothrer matter. Lucifer was God's favourite. He flew too high, became puffed-out with pride. So God had to dash him down and put him in his place.
He too awaits the Judgement. Lucifer can do no harm, for his wings have been clipped.

Jesus preached the way of Good (as he saw it and as he saw was his Father's will)...but died a Martyre.
So much has been given to the teachings of Jesus, but little to that of his brother

I grew up thinking there was the good and the bad-- the good meaning God, and the bad meaning the devil.
The creepy thing about it is, the more you speak of him, the closer you bring him to yourself. And I am quite giddy to know what happens to him when the time comes...

I have been 'bad' in my life, sometimes, and I would just loathe to be sent 'down there' with evildoers.
I really did believe in all that as a child, and I felt frightened. My grandmother told me not to stare in the mirror, or s...n might pop up behind me.

Research for a friend a few months ago who was doing a Uni paper on this subject (hence extracts from my submission to her) gave me thought that whilst my personal original opinion was Satan...God of the Underworld...Hell and Damnation and all that was only PART of the truth.
After much research into the matter I found, as many religions, they turn the Bible to their own ends.
Eg....Adam and Eve were punished for eating from the Tree of Life...
"And the LORD God said, 'The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.'" - Genesis 3:22
A statement of fact....best to my knowledge which is small....Nowhere in the Bible is Satan alleged to do anything even remotely as "evil"
According to traditional Christian doctrine, the main “evil” thing Satan is believed to do is simply to lead people away from Christ. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing depends on how you feel about Christianity.
Another thought.....has this not been 'magnified' by films...Vampires, Werewolves, Banshees etc in this modern day.....
What of my own Path? A Wicca....has this not been misinterpretated over the centuries? Witches to be burnt at the stake because of their knowledge in plants and herbs and rites.
What difference is there between our Wiccan Rites and that of the Christian Ways...They worship 'idols' (was that not forbidden? They partake of wine..being the blood of Christ.
I leave you to think on what I have said.

Thats exactly (what i beleive as a muslim) what the satan,the Devil,the Iblees or what ever name you give it,will say on the day of judgement.It will defend its case by arguing that it did not hold our hands and made us to do evil,it only plants the idea of evil in our minds and we acted upon it's evil ideas out of our own choice.
The devil challenged the creator that it will prevail and that the creatures(Humans)for whom it is being banished from heavens will dany God's,Allah's,creator's will and follow it.
Then the Devil was challenges back,and the Creator gave it all the powers it needed saying that all the Humans who are true beleivers in the creator will never fall in the Devil's trap.Thats how the eternal tussle between good and bad started.

but once again i see something interesting in the title of the website you posted.666 is the so calles Satan's or the beast's number,although the beast or anti-christ or Dajjal is a totally differant character from satan.
Its three times upside down of Arbic 9.In arabic letters are written from right to left so the arabic 9 faces the other way.

Can anyone tell me when the term Satan came from and the timeframe? I looked at the link that Pauline kindly provided which said that Satan existed before God and the Judaeo-Christian Bible.
I didn't linger long because the site was proclaiming to represent freedom and tolerance and then referred to Jesus as the 'Nazarene' which I thought was disrespectful to Christianity and its many denominations. Or is Jesus so powerful that they dare not speak his name?

But the point was that Iblees disobeyed the direct order of the Divine being.It was the disobedience that made the Divine being angry and was ordered to leave the heavens forever.But he turned round and challenged the Divine being.He said that if You(the Divine being) are rejecting me for this new(humans) creature of your's then give me power and life until the end of time and i will show you how unworthy they are and i will make them to follow me and not you.Allah accepted the challenge and gave iblees all the powers he requested,and then created all the signs and mechanisms of guidance towards good,but kept Himself hidden.
To this date there is the Divine being guiding humanty towards Himself and the Devil or Iblees doing the opposit.We have signs and clues towards both directions and we are free to choose our way.Only one way leads to eternal success and again its only our own judgement which will show us the right path,as we all have been created free to choose.

I would go with Cult rather than religion tho.... If you've known ne of the sciencetologists in this country then it makes a small difference lol. Don't think Satantists would get tax breaks either.
Am a spiritualist personally which is one of the more 'chilled out' versions of christainity but one of the more odd ball. But we definitly believe in the darker destructive aspects if not the devil as a person himself.

Firstly, there is no consensus as to who or what Satan is. Christians have named Pagan deities 'Satan' when in fact that's quite wrong. The god with horns and sometimes hooves can be Pan, or maybe Cernunnos (there are others, but I'm talking generally here.)
Most pagans (including myself) do not believe in a devil. Or Satan. We believe that Man himself is responsible for his evil acts, and must answer for them accordingly.
Their is a branch of belief called Satanism, but to be honest that is not something I know much about. I do know, however, that a Satanic is an inversion of the Christian Mass. It's a relatively recent phenomenon (centuries rather than millennia) and requires a defrocked priest to perform it properly. So you could say that Satanism is dependant upon Christianity in a way...
In my experience, most people who describe themselves as Satanists do so in order to intimidate others with their 'wickedness.' It's a 'Ooh, look at me, I'm so eeeevil!' kind of thing.
The really wicked among us tend to hide behind a cloak of apparent goodness. Evil is never so evil as when it is pretending to be good...

The devil or satan is never mentioned in the Old Testament by any names other than the Adversary in the story of Job or The Serpent in the garden of Eden.
The name Satan is in the new Testament so it is a recent term and believe it or not Satanism is a Christian phenomenon!!!!!
When cast out of Heaven by St.Michael he was cast down to Earth and this has been his domain ever since do you ever puzzle why so much missery, war and evil goes on here? Idiots have and still do worship him and many in the highest echelons of society are involved.
His other names like Lucifer means light bearer or bringer and many secret societies have the symbol of a torch bearer to represent this. Including the Conservative Party in the UK and British Telecom. The Illuminati group is also refering to this... bearing light.
Oh this is an uncomfortable subject and I'm puzzled you want to study it. Be wary, tread carefully, do not be deceived and make sure you are strong.

Oh what an interesting subject, only just found it and couldnt resist joining in.
My knowledge of Satan is this -
He (or she) was an angel cast out of heaven for questioning Gods word, rebelling a bit, not conforming exactly to what the other angels did. Therefore was told to leave.
Now, to me rebellious and questioning dosnt mean the same as evil.
What confuses me about Satanism/Devil worship is the fact that for one to believe Satan/the Devil exists, then dosnt one have to believe the word of the bible? The bible being a book that lays down the rules for those choosing Christianity as their religion. So therfore does this make Satanism/Devil worship just another branch of Christianity?
I follow a pagan pathway, and as Tylluan already mentioned, i believe man is responsible for his own evil doing, no other.

As there was no organizational religion, complete with rituals, dogma, fellowship and a philosophy that could be accessed by scholar, layman, or religious potentials prior to 1966, it would seem the Church of Satan is the only legitimate place to get your information.
Prior to 1966 Satanism was a word used by Christians to define the branch of Christianity called Heresy or Devil Worship: The belief in all the silliness of the Holy Bible and it's accouterments, but the worship of the anti-Christ instead of Christ. They are different sides of the same coin and exist today by those who call themselves, much to the chagrin of genuine Satanists, Traditional/Theistic/Spiritual Satanists.
Genuine Satanists find their natural thoughts and views reflected in The Satanic Bible. It is in that book that the true Satanist accepts man's need for religion, ritual, dogma, and fellowship but no need for a god or a devil or salvation from beyond.
